An Echo For Return (2023) WIP

An Echo For Return (2023) is the second in a three-part moving image series, exploring the artist’s relationship with her late father, the South African jazz musician Russell Herman. Filmed during a research trip to Cape Town, South Africa in December 2022 – the birthplace and home of Herman – Prowse documents her first visit to her father’s homeland. Following the work of Black feminist scholar Saidiya Hartman, Prowse questions the extent to which second and third generation migrants have an inherent connection to their ancestral lands, particularly when they don't have direct routes to them.
